Times Like These

This has been an extremely hard year in the Pearson household and to say we have been untouched by the economy would be grossly false. Like many, the price of simple things as groceries has come to add up to a lot. Thankfully we have a superstore that makes some of those prices competitive but I can't believe sometimes how my mom is coming out in me. I remember growing up and saving everything. I would like to say that my packrat characteristics stemmed from this but I see my own daughter turning into a packrat and I know I haven't influenced this--if it's not put away, and it looks like trash, it goes in the trash! I'm talking about things like the ever growing tin foil ball (of RECYCLED tinfoil), making caseroles so the chicken goes further, putting unfinished glasses of milk in the fridge to be drank or used for cereal the next morning, pooring half empty glasses of kool-aid back in the pitcher, limiting the kids' toilet paper usage (or painfully telling my little boy that no, he does NOT have to use TP when he pees), shifting your schedule to make only 1 short trip to wherever, rather than going back and forth twice, filling your shampoo, Dawn or handsoap bottle with water to make sure you get ALL the soap out! This is all the kind of "moderation" I grew up with, and thus, was normal for me. Somewhere along the line, though, I lost a lot of my "efficiency". I stopped looking at prices in teh grocery store. I used 3 kleenexes when I only needed 1. I bought paper towels instead of kitchen towels, the list goes on.
These are priveledges to some, carelessness to others and completely foreign to even a few I'm sure, but growing up with 3 sisters in a midwest town with no stoplights, no curbs and 1 grocery store the size of my house, it was how we lived. As an adult, now, with both of us working from home, we are learning to adapt. I feel, sometimes, as though I'm going back to some ways way back when (I DON'T save my tinfoil, though!). I think of how my parents coped back then. Were they as stressed out as I am? Of course they were, but only now am I appreciating what it was exactly they were going through. Do I worry about my kids wondering why I monitor their TP usage? No, not at all. They are loved, happy, and feel very important in our household and that's all that matters to them. Knowing how to stretch a dollar is useful information for them, anyway.
I do feel, though, that in these times of uncertainty, not knowing what next week, next month or next year is going to have in store for us, make us closer as a family unit. Each year of my life gives me perspective. Things are relative. What is important is what makes us happy. And when it doesn't seem like we're very happy, looking at one of the kids and hearing "I love you, mommy" or just "hey mom, what's up?" puts everything in the right light.
Here's to us and here's to our future.......may happiness be our biggest accomplishment!

Pedicure Time!

A little R&R this weekend and Reese begging to do pedicures at home. Karly was so kind to let him paint her toes with the caveat that mom would "redo" them when he was finished (although Reese was unaware of this). Click on photo to see detail!

Emma's birthdya also this weekend and she had a fun day with the family. We cooked out with her grandparents and then went cosmic bowling. Dad beat her only on the last round when he got a spare and an extra bowl. Also note, dad used bumpers. And tried hard.

We had a successful weekend in Albuquerque! Karly performed well improving all her times! Emma got 3rd place overall for 8&Unders. Way to go girls! Reese survived another meet weekend but got to see lots of airplanes at the base! We go to Los Alamos for state short course meet this weekend and then will be done with swim meets for a couple months. Working hard, still, nonetheless. The kids love swimming. Karly will be busy with gymnastics, still, too.
To check out Emma's times, click here for USA Swimming database. It's pretty cool!

Need a Name!

Getting close-r anyway. And I need help with names. I think we have a girl picked out (which some of you know is or is not a mute point....) but I still need to come up with a boy, as usual. Suggestions please....

Invincible or Invisible?

Where does time go? It's middle of the week already, that means I get to round up to "29 weeks pretty much". Really I'm on the 28th week so that means I'm really only 27 weeks along. Technicalities only a pregnant woman would worry about.....

Anyway, we had a great weekend in Las Cruces. The girls had another swim meet and we got to get off the mountain for two whole days, hang out with G & Pop and do a few things we just don't get to do in our "mountain town". Emma had a few tears of disappointment on Saturday (I know, she's only 8) but made up for it on Sunday with another qualifying time, this time the 100 Back. The whole team did a terriffic job and represent Ruidoso so well. This is really a neat opportunity to be a part of and very exciting to watch. Karly made a big splash on Saturday and did okay, but was so proud to win her heat on Sunday in the 50 freestyle. A perfect turn, to boot--another swimmer on our hands!

Ahhh, Ruidoso... I had an appointment with Dr. Harkins, which went great. I saw some of the neatest pictures ever on the sonogram. I saw detail that either I never interpreted before or being the self-acclaimed "expert" now, I see much more clearly! Cheeks, chin, lips.....all to melt a mother's heart. My excitement just keeps growing....pardon the pun. We pray each day for a healthy growing baby--boy OR girl!

Oh, the answer to my post is Invisible, by the way. Props to all those stay at home moms that work so hard every day to keep their families running with little or no gratitude, intentional or unintentional as it may be. My wonderful husband finished working late tonight and shut off all the lights in the house totally unaware that I was in the middle of several household duties at the time. A big deal? No. A clear message? Yep. Not to be taken personal, I know, but being the state that I am, I get the privelege to be a little extra sensitive. Though, it seems, a mother's/wife's work is never done, regardless if the lights go out.
